LMA/BF Movement Exploration Exploring Intension, Functionality and Relationships Supporting Contemporary Movement Forms
A movement workshop
a 10-minute performance by the presenters at the end of the session
Presenter: Bala Sarasvati
Assisting workshop and performance: Emery Martin and Regan Sadowski
This workshop is intended for movers/teachers/creators who enjoy exploring, applying and experiencing LMA/BF concepts and approaches and developing these into more complex movement forms. It continues to amaze me in how Laban/BF explorations continue to inform and serve our somatic awareness, technical development, teaching, artistry, collaboration and overall wellness. Embodiment becomes wisdom!
The workshop will be organized as follows:
1. Warm-up through Bartenieff Basic 6 and development of selected fundamental movement patterns
2. *Learn/experience three short contrasting movement phrases *feel free to participate as an observer
3. Observe a short performance by the presenters followed by feedback from participants.
Bartenieff/LMA based movement approaches will emphasize dynamic alignment utilized in three-dimensional spatial movement activities such as looping, threading, rotating and spiraling. Attention to more subtle details such as breath patterns, visual cues, global rotation, external tracing and more promotes fuller mobility and body integration.
We will consider Effort and Space Harmony elements and certain interrelationships to explore movement processes such as engage/release, riding on the wave of momentum, free-falling and regenerating internal and external lines of energy. The incorporation of anatomical, sensory, kinetic awareness and imagery are at the essential core of this experience and intended to further access and deepen inner body connections; and awaken movement sensations to create motion, momentum and expression.
Finishing the session, participants will learn/observe dance excerpts and revisit and renew how embodied awareness through LMA/BF theories cultivates artistry and nurtures the creative process. We will reflect personal and observed moments of authentic and fully realized expressivity. We will reflect how the correlation of these dynamic aspects are now considered central to the more sophisticated movement styles that prevails the contemporary dance genre at large.
